Professional Builder Program
Habitat’s Professional Builder Program is making a difference in more ways than expected. Not only is Habitat serving families in need by providing a home ownership opportunity, but it’s bringing community members together to work for a common purpose.
Eight local building companies (Beck Building Company, Boles Construction, Gregg & Co Builders, J.L. Viele Construction, Hermes Resort Properties, RA Nelson & Associates, George Shaeffer Construction, and Vail Custom Builders), who normally compete with each other for top dollar construction business, are providing construction management support, each taking a turn at managing one of the eight duplexes to be built at Habitat’s Fox Hollow job site in Edwards.
J.L. Viele, Gregg & Co, RA Nelson and Beck Building Company
completed the first four buildings in the program. These builders kept a close eye on the budget, scheduling and overall execution of their duplex by volunteering 10 or more hours per week to Project Management. With their expertise and support, Habitat was able to increase building capacity from 1-2 homes per year to 4-6 per year. As a result, Habitat is striving to complete the 16 home Fox Hollow project by the end of 2011.
Through their connections within the building industry, these builders are able to leverage their buying power and subcontractors to provide discounted and often donated materials and services, further reducing the costs of construction. Companies such as PCL Construction, LaFarge North America and Icon Excavation have donated the entire foundation for a duplex and two in some cases! Other companies are providing support throughout the life of the project, such as Edwards Building Center, who is providing substantial discounts on lumber and building materials.
