Frequently Asked Questions
How are families eligible for homes from Habitat for Humanity of Eagle & Lake Counties?
Families are eligible for a home based on three
selection criteria: need, ability to pay, and willingness to partner. The Habitat Family Selection
Committee chooses a family for each home prior to construction, in order for the family to have time to complete their required sweat equity
hours and Homeownership Education Classes. Habitat is a hand-up, not a hand-out;
therefore, families purchase their homes from Habitat, making a down payment and
monthly payments just like every other conventional home purchase. The
difference being that Habitat homes are sold well below market value and all
mortgages are completely interest free.
How many homes does Habitat for Humanity build in a year?
Habitat for Humanity of Eagle & Lake
Counties was founded in 1995. From 1996-2004, Habitat built homes in
partnership with 14 families in need. HFHELC
broke ground on 5 homes in 2005, beginning a new phase of increased building
capacity. In 2007, Habitat plans on finishing up construction at the Bluffs in Eagle and hopes
to start in on the infrastructure for the next project at Fox Hollow in Edwards.
Where does the funding come from to build a Habitat for Humanity house?
Most of the funding for Habitat for Humanity homes comes from individual,
business, and corporate donations. Fundraising events also occur several times
throughout the year to help raise
capital resources. These events include the Carpenter’s Ball in early spring and the Red Sky Golf Tournament in early fall. Partnerships with
neighborhoods and churches are also a significant source of support, including volunteer labor as well as financial support. In addition, funding or land may come from developers who are trying to fulfill their affordable housing requirements. Bequests or honorariums are often made by family or corporate trusts on behalf of Habitat for Humanity, and grants are also often garnered from various sources.
Lastly, hundreds of volunteer hours, including those donated by the homeowners themselves, are invested in each Habitat for Humanity house, bringing the total cost of a house well below market-value for the area.
